To Quilt Or To Hammer
The techniques of chase and repoussé were used to create the central copper portion of this beautiful necklace. Chasing creates the dividing lines in the pattern and the texture with in the flat areas while repoussé creates the high relief portions of the pattern from the backside.
The frame and backside of the quilt are made of roll printed sterling silver. The top and back were then riveted together at the corners of the pattern mimicking a hand tied quilt.
The necklace chain is also sterling silver, shaped with flattened ends with each link alternated to create the final chain. Triangles in square links connect the chain to the quilt itself and act as a closure on the backside.
A final oxidized finish was given to the entire necklace to allow for all of the details to show up and be admired.
The tiny little pink and cream pinwheel quilt pictured here was the inspiration for this new necklace. I made the quilt itself back in 1996 for a little pink teddy bear my Husband gave me.
Materials: Sterling Silver, Copper, Chased, Repoussé, Roll Printed, Soldered, Riveted, Pierced, Oxidized.
Measurements: Pendant 2.5" x 2.5". 22" finished with the chain.
*Oxidized finishes are not completely permanent! The colours will change in appearance, especially with daily wear. While your jewellery has received a chemical application of Liver of Sulfur as a surface treatment, it will wear off in the high areas over time causing a patina that is unique to each piece.
